SIMON BOLIVAR STRING QUARTET
as presented by Rosehill, Whitehaven
Sunday 12th September 7.30pm
Our Lady and St.Michael’s Church, Workington
This is a rare opportunity to hear the renowned Venuzuelan Simon Bolivar String Quartet in west Cumbria, and indeed the country. This concert is part of the quartet’s first exclusive UK tour – they are only playing 5 dates including London and Edinburgh.
Richard Elder, director of Rosehill Theatre, said:
“This is a real coup for Workington, the organisers and Rosehill Theatre. It has been our ambition to take classical music on the road but we never thought we would have the opportunity to bring this quartet to West Cumbria.”

The quartet is formed from principal players or the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra, part of the world famous El Sistema project which uses music to transform the lives of street children in Venezuela.
Sir Simon Rattle describes El Sistema as:
“Nothing less than a miracle… from here I see the future of music for the whole world. It has saved many lives and will continue to save them.”
Before the concert Jonathan Price of Manchester Camerata will hold an ‘In Conversation’ with the quartet at St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, which is next to the church. The musicians will talk about El Sistema and the incredible role it has played in transforming the lives of 300,000 children in Venezuela, as well as their positions in the internationally renowned orchestra. This will start at 4pm and be followed by supper at the school.
